HCG Diet Introduction

A summary of the hcg diet as described in Dr. Simeons “Pounds and Inches” manuscript. Short hcg diet introduction based on original Dr. Simeons work.

The hcg diet requires the individual to only use natural products and that goes for: tooth paste, deodorant, shampoo, soap, cosmetics; lipstick, gloss, eyeliner, moisturizer, conditioner, sunscreen etc. They must all be free of chemicals and oils. The chemicals could interfere with metabolism and hormones making the diet less effective. Birth control pills and aspirin can be taken during the course. Due to low calories consumed, vitamins and minerals should be supplemented to ensure your immune system works at it’s maximum. No massage or exercise is permitted during the course, because of the very low calorie intake your body could enter starvation mode.
The plan is broken down into phases, each phase is different, but each is designed to help the dieter reach his goal. Phase one only lasts for 48 hours or two days, in this time you are allowed to eat as much as you like with emphasis on foods that contain lots of fat: burgers, bacon and other types of meat with high fat content, fried food. You can also eat high carbohydrate foods such as: soda drinks, ice cream, cakes, pastries etc. Though many recommend more fatty foods and less sweet foods as the latter are supposed to create more food cravings and headaches in first couple of days of phase two. In this time you take 3 hcg injections every 24 hours with 125 iu of hcg ( with the exception for females that must not take hcg during menstruation ) in each injection.
Overeating and gorging on food will trigger faster fat loss in phase 2 and boost your metabolism by tricking it into thinking food is abundant for many days. After the third injection you lower your calorie intake to 500 calories a day continuing with 125 i.u. injections every 24 hours. When you stop hcg keep the restricted 500 calorie diet for 3 days more until your body secrets hcg completely.

Hcg diet introduction, typical meal on phase two ( this is the phase where you lose fat ) is:

Breakfast: Only coffee or tea in unlimited quantity, but strictly without sugar, artificial sweeteners like saccharine are allowed, stevia is also allowed. You can drink only one spoon of milk during one day.

Hcg diet introduction, mid morning snack: One piece of grissini or one Melba toast.

Hcg diet introduction, lunch: 100 grams of meat: beef, white fish, crab, lobster, shrimp are preferred. Meat must be prepared without any fat ( also cut out all visible fat ). Weigh the meat prior to coking or grilling. As a side dish for the meat, you can have 2 cups of single vegetable per meal. The vegetables to choose from are ones without carbohydrates: lettuce, chicory, beet green, tomatoes, fennel, onion, red radish, cucumber cabbage, asparagus, fennel, celery.

Hcg diet introduction, mid afternoon snack: Whole apple, 5-8 strawberries, whole orange, half of grapefruit. Note that you can not rationalize. Two small apples for example are not one apple.

Hcg diet introduction, dinner: Same as lunch. It is best to eat a different meat and vegetable then the one you had at lunch. This is important nutrition and motivation wise, you have to endure at least 23 days or up to 43 days of strict diet, make use of any help you can get.

Hydration is very important, since calories are limited one must drink at least 2 liters of fluid to keep regular bowel movement, fluid is also good at preventing cravings. Tea, coffee, mineral or plain water are allowed in unlimited quantities. The best drink during the hcg diet is water or tea with a couple drops of lemon juice. You are allowed to consume one whole lemon a day. Don’t make the mistake many dieters do, thinking that you will retain water if you drink more, our bodies are designed to store water only if it is scarce.You are free to use spices and herbs to help better the flavor since no oil or butter is allowed and only limited amounts of salt: marjoram, thyme, parsley, basil, laurel, pepper, vinegar, garlic are allowed in quantity. Mayonnaise is forbidden, since it is rich in both carbohydrates from egg yolks and oil, mustard is allowed only in powder. Eggs, though having a reputation of being one of the “super foods” is not allowed, because the yolk contains carbohydrates and fat. Eggs are allowed only if during the long diet the dieter develops meat aversion. In such cases you can take either 100 grams of low fat cottage cheese or one whole egg and three egg whites to substitute the 100 grams of meat you usually eat, again no fat is allowed. The egg must be prepared without any oil: poached, boiled or raw. Cheese in any shape or form is not allowed.
It is very important to stick with the diet, not only the total amount of calories consumed, but also the what you eat. If you will exchange the apple for extra Melba toast you will be getting more carbohydrates and you will not lose fat for that day. Carbohydrates affect the brain to produce a hormone that counters the action of hcg, thus slowing down the fat burning. Pimiento peppers, pears, artichokes are only allowed if you hit a plateau.
It is also important to adjust your diet to the food in your country. Only use ground beef, without visible fat. Beef in USA usually contains more fat than those in Europe or Asia. If you eat ground beef for dinner you must eat a different kind of meat for dinner: shrimp, crab, prawn, lobster, chicken ( white meat ) or fish. Low fat varieties are ok, but fish with high fat content or smoked, dried or pickled fish are not permissible: salmon, eel, mackerel, herring, tuna all contain too much fat to be suitable for hcg diet. Grissini or Italian bread sticks as they are called in USA or Melba toast are also permissible. In recent years leaner organic beef has also made it’s return to the American market, this meat is more suitable for the hcg diet then the traditional American beef, that is marbled with fat. American style beef may be tastier and juicier, but also contains more fat.
A diet with only 500 calories per day should not be done for more than 6 weeks or 42 days. With addition, that since on this diet you lose on average from 1 – 2 pounds of fat a day, if you reach your weight loss goal in first three weeks. You should up your caloric intake to 1000 calories a day with your diet consisting of the same foods as before, but in double portions. Another variation is to consume 700 calories a day from the start. Advocates for higher calorie diet say, that the results are almost the same, with no food cravings, headaches or any other side effects associated with the 500 calorie diet. Do not fall for this version as it does not work.
When you are finishing the low calorie phase or phase 2, you must stick to the diet for 72 hours after the last injection, then you must continue with phase 3 where you increase your calories to 1500 with adding more meat and vegetables, still sticking to foods from phase 2. The additional calories are added gradually over the course of the week. After 3 weeks comes phase 4 where you slowly add carbohydrates ( both starch and sugar ) back into your nutrition. Note that only healthy carbohydrates are allowed, no white sugar, white flour or similar.
Continue to keep an eye on your weight every day, if the scale shows an increase adjust your diet right away.
